Frida's Flowers is a digital collage comprised of a traditional Dan mask (Liberia, Côte d'Ivoire) and flower headpiece, a nod to Frida Kahlo and the floral headdresses in which she is often depicted. The Dan mask (specifically "Dean gle") represents an androgynous ideal of beauty with its full lips, almond eyes, a strong nose. The term “Gle" is used to refer to masks in Dan culture but also to the spiritual world, which can only be accessed through the donning of these masks during ceremonies.
